You probably never wondered who made the first pocket watch !
But, believe it or not, it happened in my home town-year 1500 or such.
Peter Henlein of Nuernberg is named as the inventor of this thing-
it made sure that we carried time with us, no lateness it would bring,
It was formed like an egg, I imagine it was not easy to carry,
certainly it could not grace your wrist, but it did not let you tarry.
Vaguely I recall seeing it in a museum, marveled at the size,
however, I have no idea of the cost, probably a most heavy price.
Then came those round marvels to tell us the right time,
carried on a heavy gold chain, stealing one was a big crime.
If you did not wind them , they wound down-time stopped for you-
you had to rely on that big clock at the church, that is ever so true.
Now we are lucky to have them grace our wrist, they are so light,
you carry them easily with you , at night they will shine very bright.
Yes, watches have come a long way, now they are our steady mate :
if you don't pay attention to them, surely you could be terribly late.
