What is one of the most important things in your life, I query ?
Surely the answer to this question will very often vary.
But, should you ask me: now and forever let it be said :
to this ninety eight year old positively it is my bed.
Research finds that Babylonian kings rested on ivory and gold,
the Greeks regarded their bedrooms as sacred, so I am told.
Who invented the first bed, the dictionary does not say,
to this genius, I am willing to doff my hat just any day.
Beds of grass are in my vision, but so are feathers and springs.
Very early this contraption was the privilege of many kings .
There was one in old England that held 24 people, believe it or not.
Hopefully you will trust me when I state room for one is all I got.
No matter what a fine day I had, this piece of luxury beckons to me.
Let me tell you: it is adjustable and I can read in comfort, you see.
This piece of luxury is one that I would hate to do without:
feathered springs and downy covers- that is what this is all about !

To Sarah and Rachel
Now this lady said - nothing rhymes with SARAH
She should be banished to the Sahara! And then there is that old-time movie vamp Theda Bara-
It that is not enough, how about Scarlett O'Hara
who lived down south in a mansion called Tara.
So you see, dear Sarah, nothing from the truth could be fara!
Therefore I am sending ou this rhyme today
to show that there is many a way to say:
We are thinking of you, Belle and me
"happy Birthday" whenever that may be.
But with Rachel it's another matter, alright.
I've been awake so many a night.
Noting rhymes with Rachel that I can find!
Believe me, I am really in a bind!
So i hope Rachel won't give me dirty looks-
I've scanned the dictionary and the books!
When I next see her in my green back yard
I will tell here tI tried ever so hard.
Now without a rhyme we let you know today
that you tooare thought of in many a way.
You are our grandchild, that is so true
Happy Birthday, whenever it is due!

Nightly Thoughts
The days have flown, the New Year has begun
but the hours are long because now there is only one.
Where minutes were important and seconds were shared-
where time had a meaning: for each other we cared.
The winter skies are grey, the thoughts are black
neither wishing nor praying will turn the clock back!
Life has lost luster and meaning- only memories count
yet even in those there is not much joy to be found.
I am not ready to leave or to join the others I've lost
so I hang on and much daily thinking it cost.
Such as what I could have done or wished I had,
a lack of any particular talent makes me sad.
Yet most people on earth lead an average life
I am sure the find the world empty and full of strife!
Then there are those who with a great gift are blessed:
Poets and Painters, World Leaders and all the rest.
I was told that music making was out of my reach-
drawing, singing athletics they could not teach!
Writing-I tried but ddid not haave enough imagination
to create a story that was my very own creation.
I have dabbled in folk-art by copying real art,
my poetry is just rhyming-I am not a Bard!
I envy those whose life covers a whole page of obit
but not many are chosen for this and that's it!
However with what I had, I did the best I could...
I've had a good life, that's what I want understood!

Thoughts on a rainy afternoon. dec 21 2001
To my dear Belle
It was a fair wind brought m,e from a foreign land
to meet you, to love you, to ask for your hand.
It was a kind fate that joined us together
to spend a lifetime facing foul or fair weather.
You gave us a wonderful child to raise and adore
we lived in peace and harmony-who could ask for more!
We grew old without any major pains of sorrows-
There was always the hope of pleasant to-morrows.
You then told me you wanted to be the first to leave
Your wish came true and left me to grieve.
But I am hanging on and have much to remember
Yet the fire we shared is now just a fading ember.
Life has lost its luster and the hours get long,
I am one of many who has to sing a lonely song.
There is nothing to rep[lace a lost love, gone forever now
yet the days pass and the years fleet somehow.
This is an elegy to lost life and lost pleasure
but, praise the Lord, a fond memory I can treasure!

Poem
partner is gone. The closet is not as full as before, but this
thought prevails:
You are alone
You spent a lifetime putting things on a shelf so that the dog cannot reach it. The dog is gone, the shelf is full of memories:
You are alone
each day events are happening in the world. You put them
in drawers labeled "good" or "bad". The bad drawers are
overflowing, they affect you and everyone on the globe:
You are not alone

ELECTION TIME
You want to fulfill your citizen's duty at the appointed time,
There are many choices to make, some without reason or rhyme.
Needless to say that some of the people you never have met,
so you have to form an opinion from the daily blurbs you get.
It helps if you favored a political party faithfully in the past-
you know their opinion you follow without being asked.
To get a consensus is difficult, not very easily obtained,
should you follow their ads-nothing definite will be gained.
They all claim they will be the one to restore prosperity,
many refer to what their relatives did in long ago posterity.
A well known name, however, does not guarantee a great brain,
it only proves that they expect it to help them on the gravy train.
To make the proper choice is left up to the voter's discretion-
some could care less, for others it becomes a sincere obsession.
To cast your vote is your duty and no matter who you shall name
if things don't go well- you always will know whom to blame.

WHAT COMES, COMES !
The time has come to put heat on in California-forsooth !
Never did we think it would happen that is the very truth.
Spoiled by years of warm weather it is not easily taken-
when the skies are gray in this paradise-you feel forsaken.
Yet, nothing stands still in the world, we are exposed to change,
things may be smooth-then disaster comes into our range.
Never a day without a report of a dire change in the weather,
somewhere storm clouds are certain to continually gather.
To prepare for such storms is always in the back of our mind ,
should we be exposed to them, it leaves us in a big bind.
Now they predict a big earthquake in the next 28 years,
they say it might happen to-morrow-no telling when it appears.
But we are only human and as such have cause to worry-
no matter when it happens, we shall be either safe or sorry.
Come what may, there will be a quiet day or stormy night-
all we can do is hope that our own future will be bright !

DOGGIES IN WINTER
This is the story of three little doggies in the snow !
That they, like us humans, act the same I will now show.
Mama Chula did not mind the snow, just walked along
Son Miguel with overcoat stayed on track, found nothing wrong.
Baby Carlotta was ecstatic with her little plumy tail flying !
Dena and Dan to keep up are most certainly trying.
And so the whole family knew it was winter , for sure,
in Santa Fe, once again, in the mountains with snow so pure.
While in Seal Beach the gutters are full of much icky rain,
they say there is more coming-to stay inside takes no brain.
So, now we must realize that winter is surely here-
yet, as always , spring will come for those doggies so dear !

D A T E S
There are birthdays, there are religious holidays and, of course your wedding.
All of them found their way on the calendar , to keep you from forgetting.
Most importantly, in later life the date of your dear wife's too early leaving-
that is the one that with each lonely year you will repeat your grieving.
While we make note of the dates so they will force us to remember,
with each marked day the absence of loved ones burns like a glowing ember.
Were you to quote the special page when some absence you had to mourn
it would add up to a book, counting from the day when you were born.
Nobody lives forever and we are blessed when we can reach old age-
but it is a sad tale when you find relatives gone on the daily page.
In school we had to memorize birth and death of a well known human being,
the papers will make note of that particular person, you will be agreeing.
Some were heroes, some some were murderers, each year they are named-
if you love the good ones, hated the baddies, you cannot be blamed.
In the end the dates do not really matter, your own loss is in your heart:
they are are a yearly reminder of the time when you had to part !

LOOKING AT THE PAST
The upper shelf of my wardrobe boasts an array of albums galore. Both photos and scrapbooks preserve memories forevermore. Ready to discard the proofs of a life long lived, but now of little use- my dear Daughter insisted I keep them - and that's the very truth ! Now, that the cold winter months have come to stay much inside, the notion has come to me that past times I now could invite. The faces of long gone relatives and friends entered my mind, as well as documents of achievements, I unexpectedly did find. Proof of trips taken, parties attended, shared with my beloved mate proved that to reminisce and to be grateful : it is never too late. A special treasure, cards my dear daughter never failed to send, from early on she penned congratulations, much joy to the day they lent. Now, I am glad that they were kept, proof of a now long gone past, they confirm that I can be grateful at the way my die was cast. To look back at a life well spent and to have the actual proof should give my dear ones good feelings when it is time to move ! November 2010, Otto Ross
WHERE IS THE COMPLAINT DEPARTMENT ?
Enough is enough ! there must be a place to complain !
This is California where it is not supposed to very much rain.
For days now I have been sitting waiting for some warm sun-
yes, this is what I came here for, I shall tell it to anyone !
The U.S. Army was nice enough to send me here at no charge-
I always wanted to come to this State and my happiness was large .
Many months I stayed and the skies were so blue and oh, so clear.
In this sunny place I was so fortunate to meet my future wife, so dear.
Though she left me many years ago, yet the sun was ever so steady-
until Christmas 2010 when many days it rained ... enough already!
I have a fine home but am getting tired of looking at four walls
where I must take my walks inside and the monotony so appalls.
The wind and rain and solitude, that is not what I came here for,
and only the mail and computer now bring news to my door.
But, always the Optimist, I do believe that what I am longing for:
there will be a change in the weather THE SUN WILL SHINE ONCE MORE !

WATCH 'IT'
You probably never wondered who made the first pocket watch !
But, believe it or not, it happened in my home town-year 1500 or such.
Peter Henlein of Nuernberg is named as the inventor of this thing-
it made sure that we carried time with us, no lateness it would bring,
It was formed like an egg, I imagine it was not easy to carry,
certainly it could not grace your wrist, but it did not let you tarry.
Vaguely I recall seeing it in a museum, marveled at the size,
however, I have no idea of the cost, probably a most heavy price.
Then came those round marvels to tell us the right time,
carried on a heavy gold chain, stealing one was a big crime.
If you did not wind them , they wound down-time stopped for you-
you had to rely on that big clock at the church, that is ever so true.
Now we are lucky to have them grace our wrist, they are so light,
you carry them easily with you , at night they will shine very bright.
Yes, watches have come a long way, now they are our steady mate :
if you don't pay attention to them, surely you could be terribly late.

THE CLOCKWATCHER
What is more watched than the old clock on the wall ?
Should you be late for an important date, it will surely appall.
However, there are two ways to look and to enter your mind:
if you can't wait to finish work-when you are old there is another kind.
Early on, eager to fill each hour, in old age you get easily bored,
in youth never enough time, in old age too much time you can afford.
For us oldsters the hours drag and we are looking for things to do:
the thing on your wrist moves too slow and you are feeling blue.
When you were in school you could not wait for the lesson to end:
you had too much to do, time on playing games you had to spend.
later you stood on a corner eagerly watching for that important date,
waiting for that girl of your dreams : why is she ever so very late ?
Have you figured out how often you scan this old invention ?
Counting the hours for an important meeting can cause apprehension.
But, later on, time has lost its meaning, the years verily do drag:
there is not much fun in old age to watch the clock and nothing to brag !

LUNCH IN A BOX
Never one given to eat out much, I now mostly dine "in".
Prone to think about what my past meals have been.
As a child we had a fine lady-cook to prepare all meals,
the memory of her culinary talents still much appeals.
Then came a time when , in a new country, I was the "cook"-
to buy stuff in cans and tins that's what it now often took.
A lone bachelor who did not care about gourmet food,
lunch in the "Automat" often did put me in a good mood.
Then this lucky guy married a gal, a certified dietitian,
who knew all about calories and fat, healthy food was her mission.
Thus we, and our dear child, were well nourished and ate "good",
she knew how to count calories that was well understood.
When she had to leave us and I was, once again, eating alone-
to soups and salads and sandwiches my meals were prone.
Now, my dearest daughter prepares fine food for this old fox:
once again he is so lucky to have his good meals in a paper box !

C O M P L A I N T
The California sun is shining brightly-but it has no heat !
Winter has come and with it a cold wind, yes indeed.
Spoiled by the usual warmth one does feel neglected-
where there was no need for a sweater, many a one is detected.
Pleasant walks amid flowers for now are a thing of the past,
the so seldom turned on heat is now used, some warmth to cast.
While we are blessed not have to suffer from snow and ice-
to shiver when putting the nose outside: that's not very nice.
Housebound and moping about does not bring good cheer-
not much liking the boob-tube during the day-what to do, oh dear.
Of course there is the pleasure of a little poem to write,
but for most of the time there is no activity in near sight.
In truth much complaining does not help feeling blue and sorry-
to think of who does have to work outside is another worry.
The only consolation: you can boast of a nice, warm nest:
when you are old with a stove to hide behind-you are blessed !

MAIL LADY: The postal heroes and heroines
I have been asked by my wonderful mail lady to write a poem about them, especially on the holidays.
Here it is, I always aim to oblige.
It is called : The postal heroes and heroines
No matter what the weather the U.S. mail must go through !
be it in the summer's heat or when their noses turn blue.
It is a known fact that in some states they face snow and ice-
to deliver in winter so often is not what you'd call "ever so nice ".
These deliverers are honor-bound the gifts to deliver-
when Christmas time comes, some are bound to shiver.
The presents have to arrive in time, be it East or West :
yes, there are those bringers of joy, doing their very best.
Now take California where the climate is usually mild-
these Santa Claus helpers efficiently please many a child.
They don't need parkas or fur hats, often brave the hot sun,
to just make sure that the right gift arrives in time for everyone.
Thus we are obliged to these heroes and heroines of delivery,
without them holidays would be much devoid of festive "givery".
They are those who make the season so full of glee and pleasure-
Yes, the U.S. MAIL purveyors must be considered a great treasure !

THE UROLOGIST
Now there is a doctor who will control your ebb and flow !
If your prostate acts up, he will monitor your PSA.
He might tell you things you will be unhappy to know.
if your test number is over 4 -it will not make your day.
He will give you a choice of cutting, chemo or radiation,
none of them very pleasant and difficult to consider.
Thinking about it, alas, will fill you with consternation.
But, something has do be done, there are things more bitter.
Whatever you decide, your sex life will be on hold,
if you can resume it, you will be ever so lucky.
Of course you can get along without it, I am told.
and yet, the thought of losing it is ever so yucky !
So, put yourself in his hands and take his advice :
he certainly will follow your wishes and effect a cure.
Yes, it is one of those things that make life less nice:
yet, you will be wise to trust his expertise, of that I am sure !
And that is that from A to Z !

THE SURGEON
Almost ninety years of age, I want to tell you a story.
I would not be here, but for a doctor who deserves much glory.
It all happened long ago, when i was a boy of nine or ten-
when life was still good in Germany for our family then.
I woke up feeling ill and crying, covered with sweat:
my parents said : no school today, you are staying in bed.
We shall call good doctor Frei, he took care of us for years
he will make you better and soon stop your tears.
I remember him even now, a little hunchback with a kind face.
He did not need x rays, he at once found the bad place.
I told him my stomach hurt and i had so much thirst:
he told my parents: no time to loose-his appendix is ready to burst !
They called the "Sanitaeters"-, paramedics to you and me,
the " Martha Maria" hospital my destination was to be
Two men came and carried me down the steep stairwell-
they had wet Loden uniforms to this day I remember its smell !
And then , in the hospital, I remember a cone to my nose
to inhale ether, to put me out, I was soon in a doze.
Dr Frei, the good surgeon , he cut me in time and put me in stitches-
when I woke up later, I was told all was well, no glitches.
After a few days I felt fine, for the first meal I was given a choice,
I opted for calf sausage with a yellow skin, a favorite among us boys.
My favorite drink: raspberry juice-I was in seventh heaven that day.
And then an added present: theater tickets came my way.
How well I recall all this: the doctor was great and made no fuss,
he prescribed " no exertions" and I had to wear a truss.
When the time came: off with the truss and out with the stitches,
I was ready to go to school or perhaps, build bridges !
The point of all this: outside of a hernia-no other operation,
which, at my age, is a fact I brag about with much elation !

THE RADIOLOGIST
Please lie on the table on your tummy, your side or behind-
says the nice lay in the white smock with a voice so kind.
You climb on the monster machine and feel like a fly-
because it glares at you with a malevolent eye.
With a lot of clatter she puts the cassette under the spot,
which must be the seat of the complaint she got.
The lights go out, she disappears behind a wall so protective
and her voice floats out, both stern and effective.
"Breathe in, hold your breath, breathe out, don't move,
you must stay there until I check the proof.
With a big envelope under your arm to the radiologist you go:
will your fears be confirmed -very soon you will know.
This good man shoves the film under a bright light..
stares at it and you almost die with fright !
All you can see are black things with white shadows,
how he can tell what's wrong only heaven knows.
He points to spot: there is the problem -whatever else
with you it is all a blur and does not ring bells.
But you know he sees what he sees and knows what's wrong..
because his specialty he studied hard and long.
You know his diagnosis will help you back to health,
everything depends on what to your own doctor he tells.
Without his knowledge how would they know what to treat...
therefore the RADIOLOGIST is invaluable, indeed.

Lend an Ear
What did you say my Dear ? Alas I cannot hear.
The TV is too loud ? It is not so to my failing ear.
People are laughing at somebody's wit--not where I sit !
The fun passed me by again, that's what it did.
They tell me this guy is a good Speaker-to me he is a squeaker !
I strain to hear but the results are too meager.
All this took place before I met my audiologist,
whose up to date hi tech wonder dissolved the mist.
Do you remember when trumpets in the ear they did stick ?
I was too young to know if they did the trick.
But now this tiny electric wonder you can trust..
your audiologist is the one who will fit and adjust.
So that you can partake of what you had to miss-
he is the man and I will be forever grateful for this !

OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGY (YES THAT IS RIGHT )
Ear, nose and throat-if you ache from any one of those
there is a doctor who will not turn up his-but look up your nose !
From the beginning of time when there was the first healer, I am told
there has been an effort to find a cure for the common cold.
Alas, in spite of all other advances nothing to date has been found
to quickly return an aching throat or a runny nose to be sound.
The doctor tries to ease your symptoms and this is what he said :
Take two aspirins, do drink lots of water and stay in your bed !
There are so many supposed remedies and none of them work:
if you can stay home and get paid-that's a lucky perk.
Should your ears hurt, that's where the "Oto" comes in play
and the "Rhino" is Greek when the sneezes won't go away.
The "Larinx" well you know that is when you can't talk loud-
when you try to communicate and nothing comes out .
I suggest you see this specialist if in two weeks you are no better-
this doc will find out if anything worse could be the matter.
He can prevent what could lead to being seriously ill.....
He can stop that in good time and he really will !

Your ophthalmologist
He is the one doctor you must meet eye to eye-
that is the only way he can tell what is going awry.
He'll shine a searchlight in your eye, tell you to hold still-
because thus magnified he can tell if this body part is ill.
But he first puts you before a chart with many a letter,
they go from large to small for you to read-and you had better.
Because if the little lines give you trouble aplenty,
there is no way for you to claim 20/20 .
And that's where your eye specialist is the man to see,
when he fits you with glasses he shall earn his fee.
You can drive your car, read your paper, watch TV-
without his expertise what would your life be
You'd float in the dark, into things you would bump,
you'd be lucky if you get away with only a small lump.
One of your most precious possessions: your eyesight-
only this specialist will see that it does work alright.
that is the only way he can tell what is going awry.

The obstetrician and the pediatrician :
The obstetrician and the pediatrician follow each other.
One takes care of the child, the other watches the mother.
Together they are certainly ever so important for our nation,
without them there would be no healthy new generation.
The obstetrician weighs and measures, keeps the mother quiet
and, should it be necessary he will put her on a proper diet.
Smoking is taboo and alcohol is not recommended-
neither is good before, during or after the pregnancy ended.
You can be sure that he is there, should he be needed
and he will make sure that all his orders are heeded.
He will attend the birth and do his very best,
to make sure that the mother with a healthy child is blessed.
And then comes the time when the pediatrician does his trick,
when the offspring has fever or a cough you must see him quick.
Childhood diseases is what he has learned to cure,
he will know how to treat them , you can be very sure.
So let us be grateful for either doctor's specialty, you see
because if they were not there- where would we be ?

THE WAITING GAME
Have you ever thought how much time you spend waiting ?
That this adds up to months and years, here is no debating.
Be it in a doctor's office, perhaps in a bureaucratic place-
in your lifetime many empty hours you patiently had to face.
First you had to wait, perhaps, nine months for an appearance
then you were fortunate to keep a date without interference.
You could not wait to grow up and make your own decisions,
you had to make sure to not face any major inhibitions.
It took too long to take a ride in your own very first car,
even worse, it seemed forever to buy a drink in your very first bar.
You had to play the waiting game in everything you wanted to do-
it seemed like forever that your good fortune would come through.
Then, finally, comes the time when you tire of waiting and relax,
when you are sure you have done right, left no bad tracks.
Take things as they come, when it is over, just let it go
you can't go on forever-that is what you surely must know !

Let it ring !
Sorry to report that this blessed instrument is now mostly quiet.
Whereas when you owned a store it's use was a steady diet.
Furthermore there were relatives and friends ready for a call,
but-as time progressed you wonder what happened to them all.
Outside of a nightly jingle to your so dear far away offspring,
you are condemned to wait for that darn thing to please give a ring.
Blessedly, the broker gives you a call once in a while,
there is now not much sense to keep other numbers on file.
What's worse, if someone calls, your ears you have to stress,
the hearing is such that you understand each time much less.
So, try to avoid this mode of conversation as much as you can,
it would be much better now to correspond just man to man.
Yet you are well off to rely on it if there is a pressing need,
there is a special phone by your bed to call help, yes indeed.
Daily you push a button on it to show that you are sound-
yes,it carries an important message:You are still around !

SAINT OTTO- PATRON SAINT OF PARKING
- A friend sent me a birthday card naming Saint Otto:" patron of parking".
While, in my religion there are no saints, this honor I shall be marking.
There is no doubt : in today's world it takes a saint to help find a space,
blessed be he who can help you to park in a close -by, big enough place.
When I started driving, about sixty years ago, there was no such dearth.
Now, to put your car away is really an undertaking of much worth.
It takes money and patience to put your car in the proper spot,
if you are privileged to call such a thing your own-it means a lot.
May it be known that for most of my life I walked to work daily-
in those days I was able to save nickels and dimes very gaily.
One of the perks of now being in a retirement home, everything is near,
even should you have official business you can walk, it is clear.
To be a patron saint is clear is surely a miracle and an exalted position,
an honor which heretofore was beyond anyone's vision.
Now you can pray to Saint Otto, he will put you at ease :
when you need parking desperately- just call him "pretty please" .

THE PROCTOLOGIST
For the state of your health he is a man of all seasons.
If you have complaints he searches for obvious reasons.
He probes,he listens,he pokes and runs many a test,
he makes sure there is no murmur in your chest.
He knows you inside and out ,studies your weight-
he wants to know if you sleep well or stay up late.
He makes you flex your muscles, takes your pressure,
asks a lot of questions and really takes your measure.
He tries to anticipate problems and prescribes potions,
he dispells your doubts, quells any of your funny notions.
He is the man you believe and should fully trust-
he is the one to whose orders you must adjust.
So-this is in praise of the doctor who keeps you going:
when the sands of time run out and you are aging and slowing.

The Dermatologist
If your itch is unbearable and you feel like stuck with a pin,
your dermatologist is the one who will get under your skin.
If with rashes you are bothered, or a wart or a pimple-
this fine healer will look for a cure that is plain and simple.
They know all about powders, creams to ease your plight,
they will find the cause, put everything under a strong light.
If the infected spot shows something open to doubt-
they will take a sample for testing by cutting it out.
This, then will find its way to a lab for examination
so that the diagnosis, for good or bad, has confirmation.
You go home, try not to scratch and hope for the best,
but- thoughts of skin cancer do not give you much rest.
You remember, they all told you to avoid strong sun,
and you know that tanning is not what you should have done.
So,it will be a great relief when a negative report you do receive,
you are let out of your misery and do get a reprieve.
Should it go the other way, these good doctor will set it right,
you can rely on them to put up a very good fight.
They are here "to save your skin" and will use all their skill
to make you feel well-be sure that they certainly will !

Doctors
Now-there is a story that is mostly upsetting.
Because it is not easy from them help to be getting.
Their schedule is usually filled to the very bursting-
too many patients for relief and advise are thirsting .
You put off calling, you just hope the pain will go away,
you are afraid what after the examination they will sy.
Always the worst scenario whirls through your mind,
you pray that something very benign they might find.
Then you get an appointment-a week later or even more.
You must get there early and realize: whatever for ?
The waiting room is crowded with people wanting attention,
so, you sit there for an hour, stew beyond comprehension.
Do not blame the doctors, they are doing the best they can,
yes, they make us live longer, but the wait was not in their original plan.
They put in many years to serve mankind, to make us feel good:
but you must wait your turn, I hope that is fully understood.

Your Doctor
No doubt there was a doctor at hand when you came into this world.
He or she checked you over from head to where your tiny toes curled.
From then on,admit it you saw an endless succession of these healers,
every part of your anatomy was checked, their hands were the feelers.
Some of them you really liked, others you were afraid of, you will admit-
but, when it comes down to brass tacks, a, lot of good they all did.
They straightened your teeth, calmed your aching belly, cleared your head,
without them we might not be around, they are our saviors, you bet.
They spend years learning their trade, have remedies from head to toe,
never stop making new discoveries about every other year or so.
Their bedside manner is important, some of them are intimidating-
just follow their orders or no improvement you will be creating.
Nevertheless they are human and cannot make you young again,
they can make you live longer, take care of you like a mother hen.
So,let us admit that without them our ailments might abound-
even if their services are expensive, they do keep us safe and sound !

REMINISCING:
The year was 1912,the place was Nuremberg,Germany. An old (1050 a.d.)town famous for its fine castle, infamous
as the birthplace of Nazism. November was the month of my birth as the son of a well to do Jewish merchant. I was
8 and 9 years younger than my siblings. An accident ? I had a wonderful, carefree youth. My best friend was Protestant
and I was invited at Christmases in their home.He and his brother were later killed on the German side in WW II.
I did well in school, spoke English perfectly, learned it playing bridge in my new friend's British mother's home.
In the year 1932,at twenty,I travelled to the United States, all by myself,on a visit. Two weeks later Hitler became
chancellor and a return home was not advisable. After a stay of two years in New York, I had to re-immigrate
from England and became a citizen. Brought my sister over and together we did the same for our aged parents.
My brother's whereabouts we did not know, but he was hidden by a farmer's widow and escaped harm.
Then came the time when I was able to repay my wonderful new country by serving in the American army for
three years. Drafted in New York, I was put on a troop train for four long days and it brought the newly appointed
soldiers to Union Station in Los Angeles. Then trucks ferried us to the beautiful city of Burbank where a camp
with barracks had been erected in a nice park. I was a puny lad, small of stature, not blessed with strong muscles.
But the army in it's wisdom saw fit to make a munitions carrier out of me,carrying 95 lb artillery shells about.
After one day, I did the unthinkable: I approached the almighty First Sergeant and told him that I could not lift
these pieces of heavy armament. He was a nice guy ( we got friendly later ) and told me to go the office and
see the lieutenant in charge. This man was about 10 years younger than I ( I was 33 and over age ) and he asked
me what I could do. I told him that I was good at typing and book- keeping. he greeted me like a long lost son
and told me that they were looking high and low for a "battery clerk" (they had never looked at my resume).
And that was then my job and I got promoted to corporal. Some time later I got a memo from higher headquarters
that anyone speaking German had to be reported to them. So, I put my name down and submitted the report to
my superiors. Ten minuted later the Colonel in charge of our outfit was on the phone and told me to take my name
off. he did not want o lose a good clerk. One of those events that can change an entire life !
Our outfit was was located near the Lockheed Aircraft factory and we were to protect it against Japanese
air attacks which, fortunately, never took place. After duty hours we allowed to work a shift in that factory
and were well paid for that. Everyone was good to the soldiers and we easily got a lift to the Hollywood
Canteen where I once danced with Deanna Durbin and passed Greta Garbo on the street. Which reminds
me that early on ,in New York, I met Albert Einstein at a lecture, shook his hand and have not washed mine since.
But,to make up for this easy life, after two years, we were changed over to the " First Rocket Artillery Battalion"
in the U.S. Army, destined to lead ahead of the infantry on the event of the invasion of Japan.
Though overage and not to be sent out of the U.S. most of us were quickly converted to "Regular Army",
loaded on a ship in Seattle and spent four weeks, all by ourselves, on a converted freighter on the wide ocean
exposed to U. Boats. We escaped harm and landed on Okinawa sunburned with 3000 soldiers, most of them
broke, having lost all their pay gambling. I, as battery clerk, had to send home the "loot" of a few card sharks
which amounted to thousands of dollars. Fortunately, the island had been secured by those wonderful Marines
and we set up tents and practiced for the invasion of Japan which was not far away. After surviving a mighty
typhoon which blew down all our tents and was awesome, fortunately the day came when we saw the plane
take off for the signing of the armistice on a nearby island. Having been promoted to Master Sergeant,I had to
stay a few months longer to take care of the mountains of paper work involved in sending the troops home,
I was finally able to leave the island and rejoin my family, having escaped harm.
LOOKING BACK
There are times when we are happy, there are those when we are morose,
hopefully there are more of the first and few of the latter do come close.
Life,we all know, has it's ups and downs, but there is little we can do,
we should enjoy the good moments, the bad ones we have to muddle through.
Nothing stand still, the Earth moves and we have to take what is in store,
there will be ecstasy or dread and so it will go on now and forever more.
Just like the weather,we are blessed by the sun or punished by a storm,
consistent change follows our being, ups and downs are the norm.
In old age we are less exposed to upheavals, tranquility should prevail-
we can safely brave bad happenings, pull in our heads like a snail.
Sure, all the excitement is gone, daily tedium is the governing rule-
the outside world should not touch us,it is important to keep our cool.
Yes, we have seen it all and had to live through many a bad spell,
however, we are blessed if we can now say "all went well ".
We should be grateful for the past and still enjoy the "now",
whatever we achieved did come by the sweat of our own brow !

Dear Dena and Dan :
A few weeks before my 98th birthday- with so much time on my hands-I feel like I should make you aware of
my feelings at this stage of my life. First, let me state that I feel so blessed to have had you both at my side
for such a uncommonly long period and I am so grateful to you. It is always a highpoint in my long life to have you
near me and to know that you care.
Truthfully I can state that my long time on this Earth has been one of joy and little upset, having been uprooted
and brought to a strange country at age 20 is one of the many miracles bestowed upon me. That I escaped the
holocaust unscathed and was able to save my dear sister and parents from a dire fate is miraculous. Having
survived as a soldier in a threatening foreign country counts as another blessing. Finding a wonderful life companion
and together watching our so dear daughter grow up counts foremost in my life story.
But, to begin at the beginning : Born to a wealthy father and a benign and understanding mother, my youth was an
unblemished period, despite a life threatening bout with appendicitis at about 10 years of age, I miraculously
survived and to this day have been blessed with good health. Even at this late date my eyesight improved.
From age 11 on, I had to wear glasses and now, bless the Lord, I no longer need them to get through the day.
I could read without them ,but find it easier to put them to use when I read the newspaper or a book.
Schooling was no serious handicap,I was an easy learner. Had good friends growing up,especially
the only son of a British-born mother at whose home I learned to play bridge and the command of the
English language which proved such a big plus later on.I could have gone to University,my grades were
adequate, but I wanted to follow in my father's footsteps. He was a fine business man with great ideas
and,had he had the right engineers, I would have been the son of a millionaire motorcycle manufacturer.
But that was not to be and I had to make my own way in the world and am blessed to state that I did
so successfully.Of course, fate played another beneficial role, when on my visit to the Unites States,
Hitler came to power and I could not return home and had a safe place to stay.
Lady Luck then smiled again. My cousin in Germany supplied me with the name of a schoolfriend of his
whose uncle in new York owned two factories and ,after being recommended to him, he graciously
met a total stranger and , out of the goodness of his heart, gave me a job: pulling threads out of the
splintery floor of his ladies underwear factory. This enabled me to save enough money to bring my
dear sister to New York from Berlin where she and my parents had found temporary refuge after
fleeing Nuremberg,my home town..Together we were able to rescue our aged parents. My brother's
whereabouts were unknown to us, but he survived. His wife did not want to live in the United States
and they returned to Nuremberg and were able to take care of our parents in their last years of life.
Having been promoted to traveling salesman, I did well and together with my sister we were able
to support our penniless parents until the time when Uncle Sam demanded that I pay back for
letting me stay in the U.S. and after giving me the so desired American citizenship, wanted me
to fight for my new country.Lucky me again, being overage I was able to soldier for two years
in beautiful downtown Burbank, able to see my parents and sister occasionally and to help support
them with my meager army pay, to which I could add whatever I earned at Lockheed Aircraft
after duty hours. My colonel liked me and prevented my possibly being sent to Germany where
the fighting was very heavy. Then , to make up for this blessed time,we were sent to Okinawa
where, fortunately, peace was declared a month later. But they needed me in the office there,
made me a Master Sergeant and kept me for another seven months.
While in Burbank my dear sister and my future brother-in law arranged a blind date for Corporal
Ross and his future wife Bella. On the second date I proposed, was accepted, and our blessed,
long marriage began .After my return and discharge there were no jobs in California where
I would have loved to stay, and Belle and I had to return to my former job in New York.
Again blessed fate intervened and my new in-laws visiting in Los Angeles with their son,
now a doctor, found a shoe store for sale and invited us to join them in that undertaking.
It took Belle and I one minute to accept the offer and we and our one year old daughter
"Diane' joined them in this so successful venture. The best thing in our lives was watching
our dear daughter grow up,do well in school, and the continuation of this report is up to her.
Dear Belle left me,now ten years ago, and I look forward to rejoin her when the time comes,
feeling that I have lived a charmed, happy and successful life for which I am most grateful !

HOLIDAYS
HOLIDAYS
The government says : this is such an occasion:let's make it a holiday.
So it is thus proclaimed and will endure forever, come what may .
Of course the religious feasts are ordained for years beyond measure:
we either fast or repent and thus must forgo much earthly pleasure.
Now there are so many official days when we are entitled to relax,
really it is surprising they don't make us celebrate the day when we pay tax!
Just look on your calendar -there are so many days marked in red,
all government offices are firmly shut, the money-markets too, you bet.
So put your family in your vehicle and do your best to leave the city,
unfortunately you have to swallow each others' fumes ain't that a pity ?
Or you attend ball games, pay a small fortune for a place to park the car,
if you find a place to relax in the country -you deserve a gold star.
They say holidays are created for relaxation and you should unwind,
but if you are retired each day is when some work you try to find.
So,let each one celebrate these red-marked days in their own fashion:
they represent a respite from daily grind,do it quietly or with much passion.

HEAT WAVE
The sky is blue, the air is still-not a cloud in sight !
To go for a hot stroll certainly will show no delight.
Spending all day cooped up, that's what is in store,
yet you should be glad your only trip might be to the store.
You have air-conditioning but want to avoid that icy blast , -
there are those who do not have this, it is not fair, at the very least.
You might be prone to curse, try to stop moisture on your face-
but there is no avoiding the wetness that is now taking place.
Trying to stop it will lead to hankies that are sopping wet,
the only consolation that you are not alone in this, you bet!
The city is sweltering, tar is melting, cars too hot to the touch,
you are praying for relief, arguing with heaven: this is too much !
Of course, you must know that this condition will not last-
many such heat waves have been recorded in years past.
Surely it is our privilege to complain but it is of no avail:
just remember you'll do the same thing when there is snow and hail.
EITHER TOO HOT OR TOO COLD
The daily temperature easily can drive you to salty tears.
Especially when you are at the stage of now advanced years.
There was a time when you took the weather as it came-
but now you are apt to curse it loudly, isn't that a shame !
You are either too hot or too cold-there is no in between,
your intolerance of the daily weather can clearly be seen.
You would like to take a walk but you hate the cold air,
then again it might broiling outside, it's just not fair.
Of course there a days when you use the weather as an excuse:
a longer stay in bed-it is clear you have nothing to lose.
And so it goes-be it spring or winter you can make a choice,
because now you know what separates the old men from the boys.
Of course you prefer warmth, it makes you feel snug and secure,
then again, it lulls you to sleep-you might miss something that's for sure.
Now you can avoid shivers should the winds huff and puff :
there are easy choices should the weather be too tough.

THOUGHTS ON THANKSGIVING
Aren't we blessed to be able to give thanks to that higher power
who so benevolently looks upon us from that so high tower.
No matter what our station is in life, we are so very blessed
to be able to live and breathe, his benevolence should be stressed !
Thus we have been given this day to search our inner being,
that we can think and act is a miracle, you will be agreeing.
There is much to be acknowledged to whom we owe this existence,
no matter what your religion to each other we should give assistance.
Why do we have wars and feel that we are better than all others-
were we not created to love each other as grateful sisters and brothers ?
Let us feel that to be in this world is a miracle of such great wonder,
to live and breathe,to think and act should make us much ponder.
Thus this day is so aptly named "Thanksgiving", we should realize
that to be grateful to our maker is most necessary and very wise.
Can we hope that some day humanity will find the way to peace-
is it not time to quit acting selfish and to stop doing as we please !

WINTER OF MY CONTENT
The days are getting shorter, the evenings call for heat-
but, living in California the weather is still a fine treat.
Remembering snow and ice in New York I am so blessed,
to look for winter clothing I am no longer stressed.
So, it is darker earlier on a newly adjusted day :
but I know I will enjoy this climate, come what may.
My sincere thanks go to the U.S.army, they sent me here-
even if it took five long days to make me finally, appear.
Now, in old age ,I am fortunate to feel the warm sun
life here has been good to me, I'll not change with anyone.
To stay put is now my desire, I've been gadding about,
that I can walk on my street makes me so very proud.
Sure, I have been many places on this earthly sphere,
but, believe me, my last home, has become so very dear.
It is now the winter of my content that I am able to enjoy:
take my word for it-this is the best place for any old boy !

HOLIDAYS
Holidays come and holidays go :
each time we are a year older-wouldn't you know.
Be it Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year's to celebrate:
I know one thing: at our age we cannot stay up too late !
With pleasure we remember occasions, much in the past-,
now it is difficult to keep open the eyes, we tire too fast.
In our youth each feast day found us so full of vigor-
now we have to abstain from too much food or hard liquor.
Our hair got grayer, our backs are much more bent,
we have to have a nap before time to celebrate can be spent.
Yes, here you have it: you are just not what you used to be:
just do not put any Easter eggs under the Christmas tree !
each time we are a year older-wouldn't you know.
