H U S H

It is a matter of fact that often in life we are exposed to much noise.
To be able to function through it- it surely gives us much poise.
Living in a big city there is little escape from this inevitable pest,
if we are lucky the only real relief from it is a good night's rest.

Memories about this nuisance now crowd my so quiet existence,
am I not blessed to be able to shut out noise without much resistance ?
My thoughts go back to a policeman's whistle, a streetcars' bell
or a crowded marketplace where their goods they loudly try to sell.

Yet, there can be too much of this so unearthly daily quiet-
a little lively noise could be wished for some pleasant diet.
Yes, radio and television can supply this missed commodity,
but, as for myself, I do prefer them off-this is surely an oddity.

The hours now pass often with noiseless reading or some writing,
if I should hear an ambulance siren, it is ever so very exciting !
I guess this is what retirement does bring : peace and quiet,
yet should not a good conversation break this daily diet  ?
