M Y L A S T D O M I C I L E / Morning routine

I shall report about my nightly activities later on, but I think it is proper to begin
at the beginning.
Very seldom do I oversleep so that usually at 7 AM I am ready for my best meal
of the day, my breakfast. However, it is preceded by opening the door to retrieve
my daily L.A. Times which arrives about a quarter of an hour before and, so far,
has never failed.
Breakfast is preceded by taking the first of my two daily soy pills (which are so big
that I have to mash them in a gadget for that purpose) this goes to the bottom of
a big plate  (the last one of its kind). This will followed by taking my blessed only
daily medicine (lucky me):  a very small chewable aspirin pill and a larger chewable
vitamin which my good doctor approved when I showed it to him. Then comes the
food :  a  good part of a banana sliced (the rest is saved for lunch) a nice helping of
blueberries and, of course, my favorite fruit : sliced fresh strawberries. All this is
covered by my favorite breakfast cereal: Honeybunches of Oats. Doused with
regular milk and I am ready for this so forward looked to meal. It is accompanied
by reading the headlines of the paper only (the rest is for lunch) and never missed
will be the daily picture puzzle which I just love and usually can solve with gusto.
The answer does not come until the next morning, so I better !
Breakfast is not over by a long shot. Here comes a small roll out of the toaster
and my favorite drink daily for so many years-the wonderful sweet Swiss (Ovaltine)
Chocolate Drink which I so enjoyed in my youth in Germany and which I blame
for my longevity ! Cream cheese and strawberry jam covers the roll and I can feast !
Now, I am privileged at my advanced age to return to my good bed at 8 AM.
(after I make my daily call to my good neighbor to assure each other of our well-being.
This is the time to luxuriously solve the daily crossword puzzle in the Times which
provides me with the necessary brain exercise. Sunday to Wednesday is great
but Thursday, Friday and Saturday I  beg off-too many personages I do not know.
However on Thursday AM comes the daily  LW paper with a puzzle that is not
too difficult and has the solution on another page. The other two days I have a puzzle
book ready. So it is all covered.
Usually my day begins at 10 AM (after snoozing another hour or so). I love
my cozy bathroom which provides me with some heat when needed and it feels
good when I come out of the shower. I take my alarm which later hangs around my neck,
to the shower with me and hope I shall not need it there-but just in case. I shall not
bother my readers with my daily ablutions, yet let it be said that I come out clean
and ready to face another day.

L E T T E R S

What greater joy than finding letters at your very door .
It is something to look for with anticipation, yes, forever more.
In this day of electronic greetings they are a personal get together,
even though I pity the carriers, they have to be out in any weather.

In old age when friendships dwindle they are such a welcome sight,
although now they are mostly asking for money ,that ain't right !
Yet, there are some that are keeping old friendships alive,
to exchange experiences from the past one should much strive.

Handwritten ,these missives have a certain warmth and so please,
yet, unfortunately, there now is a definite dwindling of these.
Astoundingly I saw an ad for fountain pens on my television:
does anyone use them now ? As a signature, prints fulfill this mission.

Thus it is regrettable that this correspondence is a thing of the past,
everything now has to be mechanized and done ever so very fast.
To find a handwritten message in your box is a joy to behold :
there is nothing better than to find someone's character thus unfold.

There it hangs down from the ceiling , so perfectly round.
Over the kitchen table this light-giver is so easily found.
it is called a "Globe' and it's shape is a reminder of our Earth.

We all know that we live on a place that has no final end-
were we to travel all around it-a perfect circle it would send.

S U N D A Y

It used to be the best day of any week long before-
but now it is just another 24 hours  and no more.
Where once I was looking forward to rest and relaxation-
now there is no special need to look for a prime occasion.

Yet-there is one item to make it the special day of the week -
the Sunday Times is at the door and the puzzle I do seek.
After a fine breakfast at 7 AM-just like any other day,
the return to my cozy bed is special, I truly want to say.

The back is raised, the covers arranged, the light will shine,
and, I am happy to state the solving exercise is now all mine.
I am so very blessed that the brain is still working so well,
yet -there are some questions so rough, they are sheer hell !

Some stay unsolved, the dictionary I abhor, be that as it may
this is now my favorite occupation, what else can I say ?
Two former authors passed away, the new one is so tough-
no doubt she is a brainy lady, yes, I cannot thank her enough !

T H E C A L E N D A R

There it sits on my nice table in all it's scribbled beauty.
Each space filled with inky notes, reminding me of some duty.
Sure enough, it carries numbers and names to keep me abreast
of the things I have to do each day-it surely knows that best !

Yes, there was a time when on it there was hardly an open space,
but now there is no big problem to find an empty unused place.
Most prominent are doctors names or a time to go to school-
that I am able to keep appointments show that I am no old fool.

In July, all of a sudden, these time keepers appear under my door,
after keeping one or two, they go to the Library for 25 cents, no more.
Truly they show pretty pictures or landscapes of much delight,
but how fast these days go-it surely could bring serious fright.

The older you get, the more you have to rely on such an aid,
to get where you are supposed to go, to be sure you are not late.
You can rely on these so pretty contraptions to get there on time-
if you just pay close attention your reception could be sublime !

H U S H

It is a matter of fact that often in life we are exposed to much noise.
To be able to function through it- it surely gives us much poise.
Living in a big city there is little escape from this inevitable pest,
if we are lucky the only real relief from it is a good night's rest.

Memories about this nuisance now crowd my so quiet existence,
am I not blessed to be able to shut out noise without much resistance ?
My thoughts go back to a policeman's whistle, a streetcars' bell
or a crowded marketplace where their goods they loudly try to sell.

Yet, there can be too much of this so unearthly daily quiet-
a little lively noise could be wished for some pleasant diet.
Yes, radio and television can supply this missed commodity,
but, as for myself, I do prefer them off-this is surely an oddity.

The hours now pass often with noiseless reading or some writing,
if I should hear an ambulance siren, it is ever so very exciting !
I guess this is what retirement does bring : peace and quiet,
yet should not a good conversation break this daily diet  ?

THE NUMBERS GAME

It is an open secret that numbers rule the world, there is no doubt.
One starts to learn about them early, and what they are all about.
No need to be well versed in arithmetic, but one must know how to count,
because, without adding or subtracting- there is no getting around.

First thing one must learn: how to count your fingers, there are ten,
if need be you can rely on your toes. They are the same for women or men.
The most important are those which are spelled on all kinds of money,
should you not be able to know the value, you sure would feel funny.

Numbers are found in all kinds of things, they surely affect your daily life,
it is no secret that there are men on Earth who can count more than one wife.
To be able to count properly is what they very early teach you in school,
should you not know that 2 by 2 is four- you surely feel like a silly fool.

It is most important that you know your age, so you can act like it daily,
and, most importantly-know your years and act like them most gaily.
It is no game that counting will show how your importance does measure,
but if the numbers add up favorably- you surely own a very fine treasure

The Helper

There was a time when no help was needed-all was well with little me-
but then comes a spell when assistance is needed, as you will see.
This was when the good old car was no longer at hand for daily use,
surely I would not have passed another test-there is a good excuse !

Shopping days were over and definitely succor was due without a doubt,
yes, with greatly advanced age - no driving, that is what this is all about.
Yet, one has to eat, see the doctor, the barber, there are things to do
no sitting still- the days come and go-that is ever so very true.

Where once it was possible to rely on oneself, now a helper is needed,
to find a good person to assist, twice in this I happily succeeded.
Two fine ladies I found to live nearby, they were of such good aid,
but nothing lasts and they both have been ailing much of late.

Thus the search begins again and I trust a good person is around,
because a pleasant helper very clearly soon has to be found.
But Leisure World is a place where truly there is a definite need-
please wish me luck that in a new search I shall soon succeed !

My faithful servant

This is what i am now condemned  to daily do without !
Not being allowed anymore to drive-this what this is about !
My very first car,a real clunker,I got rid of it ever so quick,
there were many faults with it, driving safely did not click.

There were several others until I found one that I cherished,
the one with which unhappy thoughts quickly perished.
I am ever so happy to state-only one mishap without tears,
that was long ago then this one came and served 23 years.

Truly, I loved my good VOLVO-it behaved ever so very well-
when I had to part with it, I was very sad, that I must tell.
There is the happy notion that my dear kids now put it to use,
it still looks good and goes anywhere, that is the happy truth.

Luckily I live without,do my walking. Others see to my needs-
but, once a week,I start it and it responds to perform good deeds.
When I think of it, I do so with much pleasure and gratitude,
dreaming of it's faithful service brings a much grateful attitude !
